Ruckus in Senate as opposition records protest on petroleum prices hike

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The ruckus was marred in Senate session on Monday when an opposition senator criticized the government over recent hike in petroleum prices. During the ongoing session of the Upper House, the opposition criticized on petroleum prices hike and they staged protest on standing their seats. The ruckus increased in the session when opposition was not allowed to speak on the inflation. In his speech, vehemently criticizing the government, Senator Javed Abbasi said the government has dropped a petrol bomb over the people in the form petroleum prices hike. “The government should explain why it has increased the prices to such an extent,” he asked. The speech was responded with noisy protests from the treasury benches. “Senator Javed Abbasi always disturbs the house proceedings with his antics,” Leader of the House Senator Shibli Faraz retorted. Moreover, the opposition has submitted a ‘notice inviting attention’ in National Assembly Secretariat raising the issue of recent hike in petroleum prices announced by the government. However, they staged walkout form the Senate session. Senator Shibli Faraz and Sajjad Hussain Turi are trying to end deadlock with the opposition.

Opposition demands urgent debate in house over inflation

The opposition motion signed by the key parliamentarians from Pakistan Muslim League-N and Pakistan People’s Party have demanded an urgent debate in the house over hike in prices of including petrol, kerosene oil and other petroleum products. The notice inviting attention was signed by parliamentary leader of PML-N Khawaja Muhammad Asif, former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal, Marriyum Aurangzeb and PPP’s Shazia Marri. The notice has been submitted to the Secretary National Assembly under Rule-88 of the house. Earlier on Feb 1, the opposition parties in the Senate has rejected government’s decision to increase the Hajj expenditures. Jamaat-e-Islami Senator Mushtaq Ahmed, who tabled the calling attention notice, said that the government had carried out a drone attack on the Hajis. He questioned dismissal of the recommendations of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) and the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ request for the subsidy.
