Model Town incident: Court allows JIT to record Khawaja Saad’s statement

LAHORE (92 News) – The accountability court in Lahore on Tuesday allowed the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) – inquiring into the Model Town incident – to record the statement of former railways minister Khawaja Saad Rafique at Kot Lakhpat jail. As per details, the JIT has moved a plea in the accountability court to grant permission to record Khawaja Saad’s statement in the tragedy. Khawaja Saad currently is on judicial remand in Paragon Housing scam till April 4. In the plea, the probe team official sought court’s permission to record the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader statement, as he is nominated in the case. Contacted the Anti-Terrorism court to seek permission in this regard, but asked to contact relevant accountability court, the plea state. The JIT pleaded the court to grant permission to record Khawaja Saad Rafique’s statement in the camp jail. Accountability Court Islamabad allowed the Punjab police to question former prime minister Nawaz Sharif about the Model Town case, who is serving seven-year prison term in Kot Lakhpat Jail. Accountability Judge Arshad Malik had granted a plea moved by DSP Muhammad Iqbal seeking permission to question the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) supreme leader in the case.

Joint Investigation Team (JIT) that was formed to probe Model Town carnage will visit Kot Lakhpat Jail on March 20 (Wednesday) to record statement of incarcerated former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. On Saturday, the provincial home department of Punjab had permitted the JIT to proceed with the investigation into the case. Nawaz Sharif is currently serving seven-year sentence at the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference. On June 17, 2014, Punjab police went to remove the barriers placed outside PAT Chief Dr Tahirul Qadri’s residence and MQI Secretariat in Model Town. The MQI workers resisted the move which led to a deadly clash leaving 14 workers dead and dozens injured.
