SC grants bail to Nawaz Sharif on medical grounds for six weeks

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Supreme Court granted bail to former premier Nawaz Sharif on medical grounds for six weeks in the Al-Azizia reference on Tuesday. The bail has been granted on five grounds. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa heard the plea. Other judges in the bench included Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah. Khawaja Haris, counsel for Nawaz Sharif, gave the reference of the letter written by Dr Lawrence. The CJ questioned the legal status of the letter. He stated that they had filed the application for suspension of sentence on medical grounds after the condition of his client deteriorated. He said that five medical boards had reviewed the condition of Nawaz Sharif and each medical board had recommended his shifting to hospital. “Nawaz Sharif needs to undergo angiography. According to doctors, angiography of Nawaz Sharif is a complex matter. The kidney disease has complicated the angiography of Nawaz Sharif who is also suffering from hypertension, heart, kidney and sugar diseases,” he stated. Khawaja Haris appealed to the court to grant bail to his client for eight weeks. “Nawaz Sharif’s name is on the ECL and he will go nowhere,” he said. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Laq9Gbx-KM NAB opposes Nawaz’s bail plea on health grounds Earlier, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had opposed the petition of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Supreme Court, seeking bail on medical grounds. In its reply submitted in the apex court, the NAB said that the bail plea of Sharif have no reference of any life-threatening disease to the petitioner and pleaded to the court to turn down his bail request. “The applicant has no ailment, which poses threat to his life”, the NAB said in its reply. “No medical board has recommended his surgery, neither his bail issue is a hardship case,” the NAB reply said. The bureau said that the the report of Nawaz Sharif’s doctor, Dr. Lawrence, seems unauthentic and self-made. The accountability bureau claimed in its reply to the court that Sharif wants to go out of the country on the ground of the alleged danger to his life due to ill health. Special security measures in SC The SC had made security measures ahead of the hearing of a bail petition filed by former premier Nawaz Sharif. Due to the limited capacity of Court Room No 1 where the hearing was be held, the Superintendent of Police (Security) of the Supreme Court issued security passes to regulate the entry of the people. Only petitioners and respondents whose cases have been fixed in the court were allowed to enter the premises of the Supreme Court building. Journalists and advocates who come to the court regularly will be exempted from passes. The general public who wish to observe proceedings will be required to contact the SP (Security) for security passes.
